Mixed team end season on high with an emphatic win at Birmingham Medics
Staffordshire's mixed team finished the season off in style as they dominated from start to finish and defeated Birmingham Medics 9-2 to finish third in the league.
A hat-trick by Shane Hall was the highlight of the match. Stephen Jinks ended his mixed career with two goals. Another highlight was Hayley Fountain becoming the team's 19th different goal scorer of the season.
"It was a very good game and all the girls seem to have shown vast improvement. The guys in the team made some good runs and seem to be using the girls more any other year" says captain Marcus Howe, who is becoming more and more confident of Varsity after seeing his team produce a great performance to confirm third place in the league.
From the very start you could tell there would only be one winner as the visitors got an commanding lead early on in the first quarter. Goals from Hall and Jinks and one by Amy Rattenbury set the pace for what was going to be a dominant victory as it was 5-0 at the break.
Captain Howe was very pleased that all the girls contributed in this victory. "I've always wanted the female members of the team to be utilized more as they seem to have been some what shy to all get involved as much as possible in previous years. This year however has seen them fighting for the ball and showing that the girls should not be overlooked."
The second half did see the hosts gain some momentum by collecting a couple of goals to keep them in the game. But thankfully Staffs' first half momentum returned for the final quarter and they managed to make it a comfortale victory.
Today was the season finale and it has been another successful season for the mixed team once again. Howe has many highlights "I think the performance against Warwick was a highlight as it was such a close game and I feel that we played so well with limited numbers. I have to mention playing Birmingham for such a fun game when we went to them. Its always good to play a nice game of mixed lacrosse without it getting too serious. Lastly, Birmingham and Nottingham for having the best looking female side of opposition teams in the league."
