Staffordshire saved their biggest win of the season till last as they claimed an emphatic 22-2 victory of Leicester.
The result all but guarantees a third place finish for the Scorpions, one higher than the previous year.
In what could be her last league game, captain Carly Edwards stood out by scoring 10 goals as she looked dangerous whenever she had the ball in the opposition half.
Dimitri Chambers added four goals to his total, as well as braces from Jack Tew, Nick Thursby and Marcus Howe. The game also saw Stephen Jinks grab his first ever goal and Kelly Stone round off the scoring in what could also be her last game of the season.
The Scorpions started strongly and were three goals up within minutes as Chambers and Edwards took advantage of fragile Leicester defending.
The home side added four more before the end of the first quarter and by this point the game was over as a contest.
However with the possibility of Birmingham overtaking Staffs on goal difference still evident the Stoke team wanted to build as big a lead as possible.
The start of the second quarter saw Leicester get their first goal as the ball somehow managed to trickle over the line to the disbelief of goalkeeper Jamie Armstrong.
This did not dent Staffordshire’s spirits and their relentless attacking continued with them converting from almost every attack.
The decision to field a big squad paid off as constant substitutions meant players were not tiring and the home sides momentum continued all the way into the dying stages.
As a direct result Staffs were able to score a further fourteen goals without reply but in the last second of the game there was a lapse of concentration in their defence which let in Leicester to score a well worked goal.
Overall though it was a very strong performance by the Scorpions and they will be looking to bring that forward to the end of season Varsity match against Keele in two weeks time.
