A terrific comeback which shows how much determinations there is in this team. Even with the horrible pitch and weather conditions there was no hesitation in getting dirty when needed, especially from German Dan. I thought this would be like Birmingham, but thankfully we managed to hold it together in the fourth quarter.
The first half was really tough for us. We couldn't seem to cope with picking up cutters or their pace. But our experienced players helped us through the second half with some slick passing in the Leicester half.
The change of Dimi and Amy in goal turned out to be a master-stroke. If I am correct it was Dimi's first appearence in the outfield in a competitive game since Varsity two years ago, which is quite hard to believe. That change, made our attack gel more and almost everyone was contributing around the Leicester goal. As for Amy it was a typical suicidal performance from our new goalie who definitely deserved getting women of the match. I was amazed at how confident she would come out of goal and check the players sticks without hesitating. There were moments where coming out of goal was almost a bad idea, but thankfully Leicester could managed to shot on the post.
Great to see the freshers contributing again. Have to first mention the début of Captain Fresher in the outfield, a definite future play-maker. Another player that made his début was regular d-man Matt Meehan. He put in a solid performance but almost scored an own-goal where an initial saved shot hit his leg and almost rolled into the Staffs goal. But in the end it rolled onto the post. All we need now is Juggernaut and all of the defenders from the men's team will have played for the mixed team.
The final mention has to be me. I thought I played a decent game. I managed to get up the field for a shot but I didn't scored but it was good getting the shot hitting the goalie's grid. One thing that I was happy that happened was flicking the ball into Jacob's mouth. For people who don't know Jacob is, he was the Leicester player that was complaining to the ref about our play 'the chopper' in the men's game last Wednesday.
I was surprised to get man of the match. I think it is only because I used Paul's wooden stick, because Paul got man of the match at Leicester last year mainly due to playing with a wooden stick. I think Leicester just get transfixed by wooden sticks. That's a little tip for players next year when playing Leicester. As for the boat race, I can only apologise but most people knew I was rubbish anyway, but I don't why people are saying I'm rubbish now. Oh well, I don't think I'll be doing another boat race again or else Staffs will get a bad reputation.
Officially we have six matches left but as it is against three teams twice over, I think Marcus will make them all double-headers as there are only a few weeks left of the mixed league. So don't be surprised if we only have three games left before Varsity.
